The Old School v.s. The New School

“Old School Network Marketing Tactics
And Why They Will Fail You Today”

I got involved with network marketing for the first time
back in 2007. Can you guess what my foolish upline members
were telling me to do? Everything that would inhibit any
possibility of success. Suggestions like…

-Make a list of friends and family
-Pass out fliers and business cards
-Hold ‘home’ meetings (hated this one)
-Using the ’3-foot’ rule
-Use the replicated company website

If any of these silly suggestions sound familiar to you,
don’t worry, you are not alone. So many people who get
involved with the industry fail because of ridiculous advice
such as this. The reason I want to bring these suggestions
up because they are…

OLD SCHOOL!!!!!

These are business building strategies that may have had some
success back in the 90′s but because of technology and the
internet do not stand a chance in today’s environment.

For one, people are constantly being bombarded with
advertisements. So when a complete stranger comes up to
them talking about some kind of ‘business opportunity’ they will
probably be reluctant to buy anything and more than likely become
offensive.

Secondly, people do not want to be sold to. But they do like to
buy. (interesting concept) It has to be their decision to buy.
Whether it is an article of clothing, a hamburger or even a
‘business opportunity.’ This is exactly where the old school
tactics fail. In rare cases, people have been able to build
their business using the ‘old school’ practices, but this takes
a lot of time, energy, money and nerves. (not too mention gluing
a phone to your head for 10 hours a day…PAINFUL!!).

There is a much easier way to build your business and that is
doing it online or in other words, the ‘new school’ way. I was
always taught to work smarter and not harder and this holds true
even in network marketing.

Using the internet, auto responders, sales letters, effective ad
copy, videos and social networking media you can build your
business in record time.

Compare that to the traditional approach of cold calling, nagging
family and friends and trying to recruit Joe from the donut shop.

By building your business this way and with the concept of
‘attraction marketing’ you not only can build your business
faster, but you can also attract the ‘type’ of people you want
to work with. You can have motivated go-getters that
contact you instead of you calling your cousin Pete who works
at the supermarket.

Yours In Success,

The Old School v.s. The New School

    Hi Joey :D

Kim Klaver originally coined the terms “Old School MLM” and “New School MLM” to refer to methods driven by old and new ATTITUDES.

Somehow, as usually happens, the concept was hijacked by people (with Old School attitudes, mostly) referring only to technology: what Richard Poe’s concept of Wave Three MLM (using technological advances for lead generation).

But it’s still basically about quantity over quality. People really do not get it.

Thankfully, the concept of attraction marketing has coincided to add some intelligence to the equation, but the Old School thinkers are still using new technology (and even attraction marketing) to find more victims.

It wold be interesting to hear Kim’s take on what’s happened. :D

    Hey John,

Your insight is always appreciated. I wasn’t aware that Kim originally coined the term, but whatever the case may be, I have seen hundreds of struggling network marketers be able to generate more leads and sponsor more distributors by using a ‘New School’ approach compared to the other one. Thanks for sharing John.
